When Replacement Beats Repair

Most doors are worth fixing. These are the ones where the math stops working.

You're Replacing a Part a Year

Springs one winter, a cable the next, rollers after that. On a door past fifteen years the parts don’t fail independently — they’re all reaching the end of the same clock.

Two or More Sections Are Damaged

The labor in a panel job is taking the door apart and putting it back together, so a second section adds much less than the first. At two panels you’re into new-door territory on a single-car door.

Parts Aren't Available Anymore

Past about ten years, manufacturers discontinue sections and hardware. Sometimes the answer isn’t what it costs — it’s that the piece doesn’t exist.

The Garage Is Unusable in January

A non-insulated door on an attached garage is a sixteen-foot hole in a wall your house shares. If you’ve stopped using the space in winter, that’s a door problem, not a heating problem.

Not sure which side you’re on? We’ll price the repair and the replacement, and you decide. Call (317) 588-0001.

What Changes the Price of a New Door

Four things move a garage door quote more than anything else. Knowing which ones apply to your opening tells you most of what you need before anyone comes out.

Size

A single-car door and a double aren’t close. The double is roughly twice the material, takes longer to hang, and needs heavier springs.

Insulation

Non-insulated steel is the entry point. Every step up in R-value adds to the price, and on an attached garage it’s the step most people decide is worth taking. More on that below.

Style and Windows

Raised panel is the baseline. Carriage-house styling, decorative hardware, and a top row of windows each add — windows the most, especially insulated glass.

Whether It's a Stock Size

Standard openings use doors that are already on the shelf. Non-standard sizes and factory colors beyond white get ordered, which costs more and adds lead time.

We measure the opening and price two or three options in writing, so you’re comparing real numbers on your door instead of a range that may or may not include it. There’s no charge for that visit.

Indiana Winters

Insulation Isn't an Upgrade Here

Three-car residential garage door installation on an Indianapolis home

R-value measures how well a door resists heat moving through it. A bare steel door is around R-2. An insulated door runs R-9 to R-18 depending on how thick the core is and whether it’s polystyrene or polyurethane.

On a detached garage that difference is comfort. On an attached one it’s your house. The garage shares a wall — usually with a bedroom or a living room — and the door is the largest uninsulated surface in that assembly. Every January the cold sits on the other side of it.

There’s a second reason that has nothing to do with heat. Insulated doors are built with a sandwiched core between two steel skins, which makes the section stiffer. A stiffer door flexes less as it travels, holds its shape against wind, and is quieter — a lot quieter, if the garage is under a bedroom.

For most Indianapolis homes with an attached garage, R-12 or better is the right starting point. If your garage is detached and you’re not heating it, a non-insulated door is a reasonable way to save a few hundred dollars.

Styles and Materials

Four decisions cover most of what changes the look and the price.

Raised Panel

The standard rectangular sections most homes have. It’s the least expensive style, it suits almost any elevation, and it’s what’s in stock. If you want a new door and not a project, this is it.

Carriage House

Made to look like swing-out barn doors — usually with decorative hardware and a cross-buck or plank pattern — but it operates as a normal sectional door. Adds a few hundred dollars over raised panel.

Flush and Modern

Flat sections with no pattern, sometimes with a row of frosted or clear windows. Suits newer builds and contemporary elevations.

Steel

What most doors here are. Durable, low maintenance, holds paint well, and available in every insulation level.

Windows

A top row of windows brings daylight into the garage and changes the face of the house more than any other option. Adds a few hundred dollars, and insulated glass is worth it if the garage is attached.

Hardware and Color

Handles, hinges, and strap accents cost less than people expect and do most of the visual work on a carriage-house look. Factory colors beyond white typically add to the price and the lead time.

Brands We Service

We install and service doors from Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, and C.H.I., and openers from LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, and Genie, along with every other major brand and door type.

How a New Door Works

From the first call to a new door — here’s what to expect.

01

We Measure the Opening

Width, height, headroom, and side room. Those four numbers decide what will actually fit, and they’re why we don’t quote from a photo.

02

You Get Options in Writing

Usually two or three, with the price difference between them spelled out, so you can compare real numbers instead of guessing.

03

We Order and Schedule

Stock doors are usually a week or two. Custom sizes and colors run longer, and we’ll tell you which yours is before you commit.

04

We Install and Haul Away

Most single-door installs are a morning. The old door leaves with us, and the new one is balance-tested before we go. Every install carries a 1-year labor warranty, and the door carries its manufacturer’s warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most.

How much does a new garage door cost?

Most standard steel or aluminum doors run $1,000–$3,500 installed. Custom, oversized, or premium wood-look doors can run higher — you’ll get an exact written price after we look at your opening and go over the options.

On an attached garage, yes — R-12 or better is where we usually start, and we’ll show you the price difference between insulation levels in writing. On a detached garage you’re not heating, non-insulated is a reasonable way to save.

Most single-door installs are a morning. A double runs a bit longer. The bigger variable is lead time on the door itself — stock doors are usually a week or two, and custom sizes or colors run longer.

No, that’s quoted separately. A lot of people replace both at once because the labor overlaps, but plenty of openers outlive the door they came with. We’ll check yours and tell you whether it’s worth keeping.

Not for a straight replacement of an existing door in the same opening. You do if the work is structural — widening the opening, changing the header, or converting two single doors into a double. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before quoting.

On a two-door garage where only one is being replaced, sometimes. It depends on whether the model is still made and how much the old one has faded. We’ll show you what the match will look like before you order.

Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, and C.H.I. for doors, and LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, and Genie for openers. Whatever brand is on your garage now, we can service it.

Residential garages of every size, from single-car to three-car openings. We install steel, insulated, and carriage-house doors, and we service every major brand and door type.
