Garage Door Roller Repair & Replacement in Indianapolis

Grinding, squealing, or a door that shudders on the way up. Worn rollers are the cheapest problem on a garage door to fix — and the one most likely to be wearing out something more expensive while you wait. A full set runs $150–$300.

Why Your Door Got Loud

A garage door has ten rollers riding in steel track. When they wear, you hear it before you see it.

Grinding or Squealing

The bearing inside the roller has worn out, so the wheel is dragging in the track instead of rolling in it. That sound is metal wearing on metal — and the track is the part getting worn.

The Door Shudders or Jerks

Rollers with play in the bearing let the door rock side to side as it travels. It looks like a track problem, but usually the track is fine and the wheels aren’t holding their line.

It's Slower Than It Used to Be

Worn rollers add drag, and the opener compensates by working harder. A door that’s noticeably slower than it was two years ago is usually telling you the rollers are done.

You Can See Flat Spots or Rust

Look at the wheels through the track. A nylon roller worn out of round, a steel roller with rust bleeding from the bearing, or a stem that wobbles when you touch it — all of them are past their service life.

The Cheap Part That Protects the Expensive Ones

Rollers are the least expensive moving part on a garage door, and they’re the one that decides how hard everything else has to work. A dragging roller adds load to the opener, puts sideways force on the track, and makes the springs cycle against resistance they weren’t sized for. A set of rollers costs less than a spring, and a lot less than an opener.

What we install

Nylon vs. Steel Rollers

Most doors leave the factory with steel rollers on exposed bearings. They’re cheap, they’re loud, and the bearing sits open to whatever’s in the air and on the floor of your garage.

Nylon rollers with sealed bearings cost more and last considerably longer. The wheel is quieter against the steel track, and the sealed bearing keeps grit out instead of collecting it. On most doors the difference in noise is obvious the first time it runs.

That matters more in Indiana than it does in a dry climate. Four months a year the car brings snow, road salt, and grit into the garage, and it settles in the lower track where the bottom rollers live. An open steel bearing packs with that and starts to rust. A sealed nylon bearing doesn’t.

We install nylon rollers with sealed bearings as standard. If your door is one of the few that calls for steel, an unusually heavy door for instance, we’ll tell you.

Which Rollers You Can Change Yourself

For eight of the ten rollers, it’s a manageable DIY job. Here’s the split.

The Middle and Top Rollers — Usually Yes

Eight of the ten rollers sit in hinges between the door sections and aren’t holding any load. With the door closed and the opener disconnected, you loosen the hinge, slide the old stem out, slide the new one in, and re-tighten. A socket set and half an hour. Nothing under tension.

The Bottom Two — No

The bottom rollers sit in the bottom brackets, and the lift cables anchor to those same brackets. That bracket is holding the spring’s full force. Loosening it with the springs wound releases that energy — it’s one of the most common ways people get seriously hurt working on a garage door. Those two are ours.

If the noise is coming from the bottom of the door, or the door has ever been off track, leave all ten alone and call. And if you do the middle ones yourself, replace all eight at once — mixing new rollers with worn ones just moves the noise.

What We Do on a Roller Call

Rollers are rarely the only thing worth looking at while we’re in there.

We Replace All Ten

A partial set doesn’t fix the noise — it moves it. New rollers next to worn ones also wear unevenly, and you end up doing it twice.

We Secure the Bottom Brackets First

The bottom two come out with the door supported and the tension accounted for. That’s the part of the job that needs doing right rather than fast.

We Check the Track While We're There

A roller that’s been dragging has been wearing the track it rides in. Flared or scored sections get straightened or flagged before new rollers go in.

We Lubricate and Balance-Test

New rollers, hinges, bearings, and springs get lubricated — never the track itself. Then the door gets balance-tested with the opener disconnected before we leave.

From a Recent Roller Replacement

The rollers on this Indianapolis door were worn and packed with grit. We replaced the full set with new nylon rollers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most.

How much does garage door roller replacement cost?

$150–$300 for a full set of ten nylon rollers installed on a standard residential door. That’s the whole set — we don’t replace them individually, because a partial set just moves the noise. You get the price before any work starts, and there’s no service-call fee on top of it.

Eight of the ten, usually yes. The bottom two are the exception. They share a bracket with the lift cables, under the spring’s full force, so leave those to us.

Steel rollers with open bearings typically go five to seven years in a climate like ours. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings usually last considerably longer, because the bearing isn’t collecting the grit and salt that comes into the garage on the car all winter.

Nylon with sealed bearings, for almost every residential door. They’re quieter, they resist rust, and the sealed bearing keeps out the grit that kills steel rollers here. Steel makes sense on unusually heavy doors, and we’ll tell you if yours is one.

Usually, but not always. Worn rollers are the most common cause of a door that’s gotten noisy. Loose hinges, a dry opener chain, worn spring bearings, or debris in the track can all do it too. It takes a look to tell which — and there’s no charge for that.

Yes — rollers, hinges, bearings, and springs all take lubricant. The track doesn’t. Grease in the rail collects grit instead of shedding it and wears the rollers faster than no lubricant at all. Wipe the lower tracks with a dry cloth instead.

Same-day service is available and we carry full sets of nylon rollers, so most roller calls are finished on the first visit.

Yes, on residential garage doors of every major brand and style, from basic steel to insulated and carriage-house doors.
